Online Casino Plans in Alberta on Hold17 Apr 2007
According to news reports from Canada, Alberta’s top cop says he has no intention of allowing another online casino gaming base in his province. This Cree band was made to halt plans to set up online casinos gaming haven on their reserve near the city of Edmonton. Fred Lindsay, Solicitor General, says he is aware that the Mohawks, who run what he claims are illegal online casino gaming operations in Quebec as a web hosting company to facilitate more than 400 Internet gambling sites around the world, have been advising the Alexander First Nation about entering the online casino market. He has no intention of allowing the Alberta band to copy the Mohawks.
‘We understand that the Mohawks may be giving Alexander some advice on how to set it up. I’m not intending on letting it get away on us,’ said Lindsay of the online casino plans. The Alexander band has set up a web hosting company identical to one operated by the Mohawks, and has also established its own online casino gaming commission to offer online gambling licenses, with application fees starting at US 20,000 dollars.
Officials, and Lindsay, have stated that they will require the Alexander band to cease and desist if it is their intent to conduct an illegal online casino operation in the province of Alberta. The Alexander band has responded by stating that they view themselves as a sovereign nation with the power to offer gaming licenses. Lindsay claims he is not aware that the band has actually set up any online casino sites, so at this point the province’s gaming commission is continuing its investigation.
