Dispute over Gold’s WSOP Win21 Dec 2006
A knock-down, drag-out dispute has been triggered by the results of the World Series of Poker and is making headlines throughout the online casino world. Jamie Gold, the recent winner of the WSOP, took home the first prize of US 12 million dollars and, at the same time, began a dispute regarding the legitimacy of his win. Allegedly, Crispin Leyser, British television producer, had a prior agreement with Gold to share in half the proceeds if Gold won in return for lining up certain celebrities at the event. Online casino poker fans are following this developing story closely to see if Gold really did engage in this fraud.
Due to the dispute, Gold has only been allowed to access half of his major winning while a court battle ensues regarding the legitimacy of Leyser’s argument that he is entitled to the other US 6 million dollars. This definitely comes as a surprise to online casino poker fans everywhere who are accustomed to seeing poker pros win at the WSOP fair and square. Leyser claims that Gold promised him half the top prize if he could find celebrities to wear the brand name of the online casino that sponsored the event.
Leyser found two celebrities - actor Matthew Lillard and MTV personality Dax Shepard - who agreed to wear the online casino clothes. On the final day of the tournament, it is claimed that Gold left a message on Leyser’s cell phone acknowledging their agreement. The agreement came about prior to the 2006 WSOP, when the online casino agreed to sponsor Gold if he could find celebrities to compete in the online casino sponsored tournament wearing the poker room’s logo. US District Judge Roger Hunt is to consider the case. |
